On 16th February 2024, the Society of Nepalese Architects (SONA) organized “Architect Speaks” for young architects. The speakers for the event were Ar. Yash Munankarmy, Ar. Anjana Tiwari and Ar. Sunish Kumar Lakhe. Comprising a blend of both seasoned and emerging architects, this panel shared their rich experiences, design philosophies, and notable works. The event was held at Bougainville Events, Tripureshwor and the SONA Young Architects Committee moderated it. There was a good number of participants present at the event, contributing to its success, which was underscored by the positive responses and feedback received from those in attendance.

The first speaker of the event, Ar. Yash Munankarmy, the visionary behind the firm “Young Mind Imaginers,” stands at the intersection of technology and architecture, revolutionizing the field with cutting-edge practices. His innovative presentation compassed various aspects, including drone mapping that efficiently provides height, elevation, and site data, completing surveys within a mere forty minutes. This transformative technology not only streamlines the survey process but also introduces a new dimension to real estate tools, accessible both on phones and computers, shaping the future of real estate agents.

He shared his project, Dhap Dam, in Shivapuri National Park, where he showcased the practical applications of his forward-thinking methodologies. He also showed how technology is helpful in archiving architectural monuments and integrating carving design and details in our culture. Another example of his commitment to cultural preservation was Ratakali Temple, which is an ongoing project in Thimu, Bhaktapur. Here, he has been actively creating an archive of architectural monuments, employing LIDARs for efficient archival scans. He further discussed the experimental tools that push the boundaries of traditional architectural practices, from model production and the use of integrated carvings to the conservation of traditional architecture. His projects reflected a passion for creating diverse spaces, emphasizing the joy in the process. The innovative tools allowed real-site scanning and virtual launch, as in the Guru Rinpoche project in Khotang.

In essence, Ar. Yash Munankarmy talked about seamlessly blending technology, cultural preservation, experimentation, and artistry into a harmonious and forward-thinking approach in the architectural realm.

The second speaker for the event was Ar. Anjana Tiwari, co-founder of the innovative firm Callidream Services Pvt. Ltd., alongside two fellow lady architects. Ar. Tiwari talked about her experience starting her own company, the struggles that came with it, as well as the joy in it. Their first project was a challenging rooftop garden, which marked the inception of their architectural journey. She described how the project’s intricate structure and meticulous detailing set the tone for Callidream’s commitment.

The architect went through her diverse portfolio, extending to projects such as the Kia showroom design as a draftsperson, showcasing her versatility in various roles within the field. The design of a cold storage facility in Bardiya not only reflected her expertise in architecture but also served as a visual representation of the building’s identity. Her involvement in a hotel renovation project, with a predominant focus on landscape elements, highlighted her ability to blend structural and natural elements seamlessly.

An ongoing venture included the design of a municipal office, demonstrating her sustained commitment to shaping public spaces for functional and aesthetic purposes. She talked about a restaurant project where she skillfully employed glass and a blue color palette to evoke beach vibes, creating an immersive dining experience. Her work on a press office design showcased meticulous cubical planning, emphasizing both functionality and aesthetics. She further spoke of her journey in transforming a residential building into a clinic, the challenges she had to face, and the lessons learned during the project. Further, she explained her involvement in designing suit rooms in apartment spaces, some residences, and landscape designs. With a rich and varied portfolio, Ar. Anjana Tiwari continues to make an impact.

The third speaker of the event, Ar. Sunish Kumar Lakhe is the principal architect and co-founder of Aarshi Associates. He talked about his journey and acceptance in the architecture world. He mentioned the opportunity received during his internship to design the Kathmandu District Court. The design process involved a thorough understanding of client requirements, and he seamlessly integrated their needs with his own architectural vision. His proposal not only met the initial specification but also included additional elements to enhance functionality and aesthetics, showcasing his commitment to client satisfaction. He discussed how, in the realm of professional practice, he chose to gain valuable experience by working under established consultancies before embarking on the journey to open his own office, Aarshi Associates. Recognizing the fundamental role of geometry in architecture, he learned to value space and developed a meticulous approach to planning.

The process of design, particularly in transforming irregular sites into maximally usable spaces, became a signature aspect of his architectural approach. Participating in the Himal General Insurance competition, Sunish Kumar Lakhe demonstrated his commitment to conceptual development. He not only engaged in the initial concept development but also questioned and refined his ideas within the design process. Emphasizing the importance of robust planning, he drew a metaphorical connection between a project plan and the development of a baby’s heart, asserting that a plan is the heart of any architectural endeavor, with the 3D design following suit. His design philosophy is deeply rooted in drawing inspiration from the essence of Newari architecture, integrating cultural elements into his projects. Ar. Sunish Kumar Lakhe , while discussing his journey, showcased some of his projects like Yala Durbar and the Kathmandu View Tower. This holistic approach to architecture showcases his continuous learning, growth, and dedication to delivering innovative and thoughtful designs that stand the test of time.

The speakers’ experiences and stories inspired and engaged the audience. The session was formally ended with a note of thanks by Ar. Dilliram Sapkota and the Vice President of SONA Ar. Ek Raj Adhikari, and the distribution of a token of love.
